Doping case: ICC extends deadline for Yasir clarification

KARACHI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has extended the deadline for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to prepare a detailed report in the Yasir Shah dope case.

The extension will facilitate the PCB in submitting their findings by 9 pm on January 4.

Pakistan's ace leg-spinner was provisionally suspended by the ICC on December 27 for failing a dope test.

“Shah has been charged with an anti-doping rule violation on a sample he provided in an in-competition test,” an ICC statement announced.

“The test, conducted on 13 November 2015, was found to contain the presence of chlortalidone, a Prohibited Substance which appears in Section 5 of the World Anti-Doping Agency list (in the category of Specified Substances),” it added.

According to a source in the PCB, Pakistan has sought more details from the ICC after the submission of the dope test report and notice of charge.

The chairman of the PCB Executive Committee, Najam Sethi confirmed that a comprehensive report of Shah's case would be submitted to the ICC.

“We are trying our best to protect Shah from a long ban,” said Sethi while talking to the media in Karachi.

“PCB will back Yasir Shah in these difficult times,” he added.

The 29-year-old leggie emerged as a match-winner for Pakistan after Saeed Ajmal's was reported was an illegal bowling.

Shah took 12 wickets in Pakistan's 2-0 win against Australia last year before playing a key role in this year's 2-1 Test series win in Sri Lanka with 24 wickets.

A day before he was tested (November 12) Shah had fallen down while bowling in the nets in his follow through and had to miss the first Test against England in Abu Dhabi with a back problem.

He returned for the second and third Tests, taking 15 wickets to help Pakistan beat England 2-0.

Shah has been the mainstay for Pakistan's bowling line-up in Test matches since his debut in October 2014.

He has 76 Test scalps in 12 Tests for his country and holds the record for being the fastest Pakistani bowler to reach the 50-wicket mark.

The Swabi-born leggie also impressed leg-spin great Shane Warne, who recently said the Pakistani bowler “probably the best leg-spinner in the world”.

Why are trying to protect him? Is it because you know for sure that he is innocent? Mr. Sethi should be careful in his statements and should not sound as if PCB stands to protect wrong doings.

Yasir appears being victim of circumstances. He stated that he took the blood-pressure medicine of his wife to control his own high blood pressure. That is what cause an increase of the proscribed elements in his blood. If true, this should be the basis of defense in a convincing way.

Man this is getting out of proportion. Before all is lost PCB needs to protect their premier players by providing full time advisors/agents to these players. Needed to put in order the guidelines and to be followed??? Players can also have private advisors/agents to make them follow ICC regulations..

Fame earned through excellence or money is always tough to protect. It effects the nervous system and changes the whole thought process. It changes the personality and brings the egos to a different heights. Seeking help is the best medicine. It does not take long for fame and money to evaporate. Numerous examples exist in the world where best of the best players lost millions of their life time earning and in several cases spent years in jail. Boxer Mike Tyson is a relevant example. The rich and famous are always under the microscope. Hope PCB looks for long term solution to protect their squad.

PCB need to ensure that these cricketers coming are picking some academic education on the way.It seems they don't understand that these prescribed medicine to be given only by doctor can kill him forever.Otherwise don't allow there families on tour,in order to save them from having there wife medicine.It is height of illiteracy.

the guy is innocent. he made a genuine mistake by self medication which is a common thing in our part of the world. all these medicines are available over the counter without doctor consultation unlike in developed world where you can only get it if doctor prescribe it. btw performance enhancing drugs have no major part to play in sports like cricket anyway especially when the player is a spin bowler. PCB should provide him full support.

@M.Saeed it is illegal to take the prescribed medicine of someone else without having a prescription yourself. Yasir is not a child. If he indeed took a banned substance, then he is guilty and should accept his punishment. I am sorry for him and for Pakistan cricket, but unless PCB stops covering up wrongdoing, this rottenness will carry on.

yasir shah should think deep to get rid of this situation asap.Its not good for him as a player. i think diet should always be taken by good car an athleate should already know what to eat and how to digest or dispose form the body good luck with future yasir

@M.Saeed : if Yasir was suffering from high blood pressure, he should have seen a doctor and not done such a dumb thing he did. How could he have been so stupid and that too at the age of 29? Then again how did he come to know that his blood pressure was high? If it was an ongoing problem, how come PCB failed to spot it?In all earnestness if what he says is true, then he should not have been playing cricket at all.

The chairman of the PCB Executive Committee, Najam Sethi and others should be taken to task, their prime responsibility is to manage players and organize local and international tournaments but they have failed time and again and continue to display their inefficiencies and get away with it, followers of Pakistani cricket must condemn this management until such time that experienced and efficient professionals are appointed on merit basis, Pakistan has been disgraced a number of times because of these political appointees.

Team doctor should be sacked but it is very unlikely because all the posts in PCB are given to those who have connection with higher echelon. Yasir took some medicine when he was injured and the team doctor should have known that. In Pakistan even the most educated do not know the contents of a medicine then how can we blame Yasir.

@Zane - chlorthalidone is also a masking agent meaning it hides any traces of any illegal drugs. So if chlorthalidone is found in the system it may or may not be an indication of an attempt to hide illegal drug use. Hence they have banned this drug too.

i am a physican for the past 46 yrs, trained in usa and in practice for40 yrs. I have some serious questions about ICC,is t of all he took a diuretic which patients with high blood pressure take, to put a stamp on a player that he took a dope which are drugs like herion,cocaine , amphetamines ete,these are performance enhanceing drugs for a short while,taking adiuratic which makes you urinate more so you can get rid of sodium and along with that water and conserve potassium,to put STAMP ON A PLAYER THAT HE TOOK A DOPE is very unfair ,I think in doing that you can totally destroy the future of an excellent sportsman,LETS BE CLEAR HE TOOK A DIURATIC AND NOT A DOPE TO LOWER BLOOD PRESSURE.IT DOES NOT IMPROVE PERFORMANCE,IT WILL BE SEVERE INJUSTICE.
