KARACHI, Nov 2: Chief Minister Ali Mohammad Mahar on Sunday asked the provincial jail authorities to provide him with details about those languishing in prisons for non-payment of fine money. He said that he would be paying the amount so that they could celebrate the upcoming Eid with their families.

Chairing a high-level meeting at the CM House, Mr Mahar also directed the authorities to take steps for the release during Ramazan of those who had already completed much of their term.

The CM discussed possibility of providing relief to the prisoners in accordance with the Jail Manual and asked the authorities to review the cases of under-trial prisoners confined to provincial jails for years.

The jail authorities identified several cases where prisoners had developed mental disorder.

Mr Mahar ordered setting up of a committee under the Additional Chief Secretary (Home), with the PS to CM, Law Secretary, IG Jails and AIG Police its members, to bring about reforms and improvement in prison conditions.—PPI
