KARACHI, Oct 31: A retired deputy superintendent of police (DSP), his wife and son were convicted on Friday on charges of corruption and living beyond their legal means of income.

Judge Qaiser Iqbal of the Accountability Court No. 1, sentenced DSP (retd) Jamil Akhtar Kiyani to 10-year term and his wife, Riaz Bibi to five-year term and imposed a fine of Rs30 million on each.

The convicted couple would have to undergo an additional three-year term in case of default on the payment.

The judge, who is also administrative judge of all ACs in Karachi, also awarded a three-year term to the absconding son of the convicts.

Kiyani, who had joined the Sindh police as an assistant sub- inspector, was found guilty of having amassed assets and properties through illegal means.

The former DSP and his family were charged with living a lavish life, which was beyond their known means of income.

Mr Kiyani had inherited a small piece of barani land in Rawalpindi before joining the police service in 1959. In case of rain, the annual income from the land was estimated to Rs1,000. His wife owned a smaller piece of land in Haripur.

The former DSP raised assets and properties in the name of his wife and sons. His real estate included three big houses in Defence Housing Authority in his wife’s name. He also purchased three commercial plots in the DHA in his wife’s name.

Besides, the Kiyani family also operated 17 different accounts in UBL, Standard Chartered, Citibank, Habib Bank, Prime Commercial Bank, Hong Kong and Shangai Bank and Faisal Bank. Mrs Kiyani operated 10 bank accounts alone.

The judge also disqualified the Kiyanis from being elected, chosen, appointed, or nominated as member or representative of any public office, or any statutory or local authorities of the government of Pakistan for 21 years.

According to prosecution, Jameel Akhtar Kiyani misused his official position and accumulated movable and immovable properties with corruption.

The couple were found guilty of having committed the offence of corruption and corrupt practices as defined under Section-9 of the NAB Ordinance 1999, punishable under Section-10 of the NAB Ordinance.

The judge convicted Faisal Jamil Kiyani, son of the former DSP, in absentia and sentenced him to three-year term under Section 31-A of the NAB Ordinance for not appearing before the court in reference No. 21/2000.

Public prosecution prayed that Faisal Kiyani was deliberately avoiding the service of warrants to screen himself from the proceedings and punishment.
