KASUR, Oct 28: Farmers’ bodies in tail-end villages and union council Nazims and Naib Nazims have warned the government that they would stop paying abiana and ask the residents to migrate to other places if their villages remained without water.
Union council Nazims Sardar Mehboob Ullah Dogar, Rana Abdul Wakeel, Sajid Ali and Naib Nazim Wakeel Ahmad, Mohammad Sharif, councillors Haji Mohammad Din, Abdul Ghafoor, Salamat Ali, Zulfiqar Ahmad, Sultan Mehmood, Abdul Sattar and many other representatives of farmers claimed in a written statement here on Tuesday that the irrigation department had failed to end the shortage of water in Rajbahs Mudkey, Rosa Bhail, Dhariwal, Bhagiar Mar, Ghuman Key, Rajbahs Rosa Bhail, Dhariwal Chak, Mudkey, Tibba and some other places.
They stated that their agricultural land had been lying uncultivated for months due to unavailability of water.
They said a procession would be taken out in the district headquarters if their grievance was not redressed, adding that they would send copies of their statement to the governor, the chief minister and the chief secretary.
BOOKED: At least 52 farmers were booked on Tuesday for stealing canal water, in Phoolnagar.
A team of the irrigation department, headed by the SDO for canals, caught 17 farmers of Bhagiana and 10 of Bonga stealing water.
The irrigation department said the accused had long been stealing canal water, but they could not be arrested due to political pressure.
SHOP SET ON FIRE: Five persons set fire to a shop in Gaga Sarai, Phoolnagar.
Police said Faiz Ahmad was in his shop when his rival, Ghulam Hussain, reached the place along with four accomplices and set it on fire. The shop was gutted while Mr Ahmad sustained burns and was admitted to a local health centre.
The Phoolnagar police have registered a case against the accused.
