GUJRANWALA, Oct 24: Stage actress Nargis was arrested along with four of her colleagues by a police team on the charge of promoting obscenity during a play, here on Friday.

However, they were set free when special judicial magistrate Muhammad Taseer accepted their bail applications after a few hours when they submitted surety bonds worth Rs200,000 each.

Reports said the prominent stage performer, who had recently returned from Canada, had been appearing in a play for the last four days. A team, headed-by special judicial magistrate Ghulam Mustafa, raided the theatre on the orders of the district and sessions judge and arrested Nargis and her colleagues - Singhar, Nigar, Agha Zahid and Ali Ahmad.

The Model Town police have registered a case against them under section 294 PPC and 16 MPO.

Meanwhile, some religious parties have demanded the district and sessions judge that he should order closure of theatres and cinemas during Ramazan.
