Gulraiz to defend crown

RAWALPINDI, Oct 23: Gulraiz Shahid is to defend his title in the President of Pakistan Cup Tournament that is due to open at the Rawalpindi Golf Club (RGC) on Friday, organisers said.

Jameel Khalid of the RGC, told journalists that the main competition will be for the President’s Cup that is to be contested on net score.

Taimur Hasan of the Islamabad Club on the other hand will defend his Attock Bowl crown that is decided on gross scores, Jameel said.

On the men’s side, amateurs having a handicap of 15 will compete over 54 holes, 18 holes each day in the competition that is sponsored by Muslim Commercial Bank.

Besides Gulraiz and Taimur, prominent amateurs on show will be Shahid Javed, Waqas, Adil Jahangir, Tariq Mahmood and Dr. Aimal Zaman.

The event also features a tournament for ladies with a maximum handicap of 36 and juniors between the age bracket of 10 and 14 years who will compete over 36 holes.

The organisers RGC, will also hold a one-day competition for seniors aged 55 to 65 years who have a handicap of 18 and below while there will be a separate contest for veterans more than 65 years of age.

Golfers with a 18 handicap and below will play over nine holes.

Jameel said that around 200 entries had been received by Thursday afternoon for the tournament that was first held in 1959.

The course, he said was in great shape and hoped that there will be engrossing contests during the three-day tournament.
