LAHORE, Oct 22: Robbers shot dead a shopkeeper and injured a security guard on resistance on the Ravi Road, here on Wednesday.

Azhar, a shopkeeper at the city vegetable market, told police that he sent his partner, Sakhi Muhammad (60), to deposit some money with a bank. Two gunmen held up Sakhi few meters short of the bank, and opened fire when he offered resistance. He was wounded.

Seeing a private security guard, the robbers also shot at him and took to heels. The two injured were taken to the Mayo Hospital where Sakhi died before getting first aid. The guard was stated to be in critical condition.

The shopkeeper is survived by wife and two children. His body was removed to the city mortuary for autopsy. Police have registered a case, but yet to make any arrest so far. This was the third murder on resistance in the last four days, indicating an alarming increase in insecurity on roads.

According to official record, as many as 22 people have fallen prey to such crimes so far this year, though unofficial figures are more than the double.

ELECTROCUTED: A newly wed woman was electrocuted at her house at Abdali Chowk, Sanda, on Wednesday.

Her father, Khawar Ali, alleged that she was tortured and electrocuted by her husband. However, the suspect claimed that she suffered a shock by accident.

Khawar said he married his daughter Sadia Tabassum, 23, to Muhammad Rafi three months ago. It was Rafi’s second marriage, which he did for getting a son, as he had five daughters from first wife.

He said Rafi started teasing his daughter soon after the marriage and torture and scuffles had become a routine. He accused Rafi of torturing and electrocuting her.

The body was sent to the city mortuary for autopsy. No case has been registered so far.
