KARACHI: A mechanic who was also a member of Hussaini Scouts was shot dead in a suspected sectarian attack in Gulistan-i-Jauhar on Monday evening, according to Sharea Faisal police.

Police said that Syed Zakir Husain, 36, was on his way home after closing the workshop when two armed motorcyclists attacked him near Asia Restaurant in Pehlwan Goth and fled.

He sustained critical injuries and was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where doctors declared him dead on arrival, said police.

“The motive for the murder appeared to be sectarian since the victim was also a member of Hussaini Scouts,” said Karachi-East SSP Javed Jiskani. He said that an inquiry team had been formed under the Gulshan SP to ascertain exact motive for the killing.

‘JSQM man’ killed

Two young men were shot dead in as many incidents in the city on Monday evening, officials said.

“Two suspects brought Nawab Ali, 35, to a place near a graveyard in Chashma Goth, fired at him and rode away,” said Ibrahim Hyderi SHO Ahmed Shaikh.

The victim was said to be an activist of the Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (JSQM).

However, the SHO said that the victim’s affiliation with any party was not confirmed till late in the night. He said the victim was a property dealer and lived in the Sharafi Goth area.

The police collected two spent bullet casings of a 0.30-bore pistol.

In a similar incident in Surjani Town, two men brought Ishaq Mushtaq, 27, on a motorcycle and shot him dead on a road leading to Kaneez Fatima Society, said Surjani SHO Imtiaz Mirjat.

The police collected four spent bullet casings fired from a 9mm pistol from the crime scene.

The body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities.
