PESHAWAR, Oct 21: Women councillors staged a walkout from the city district council on Tuesday to protest against the NWFP governor’s remarks in which he was attributed to have labelled local bodies representatives “illiterate.”

The session commenced with convener Dr Iqbal Khalil in the chair.

Council member Shamim Qaiser said that Governor Iftikhar Hussain Shah’s remarks had hurt their collective feelings.

She deplored the governor’s remarks, saying that women had contested local bodies elections to serve their respective communities and not for the sake of honorarium. The governor had urged women councillors to give up their demand for honorarium and serve the community without any self-interest.

Women members of the council were later convinced by union council Nazim Sirajul Haq Yusufzai to end their boycott.

Meanwhile, the city district council unanimously adopted a resolution, asking the government to ban music, close cinema halls and video shops in the provincial capital in Ramazan. The motion was tabled by UC Nazim Haji Dost Mohammad.

The mover also requested to impose a ban on fun fairs on Eid.

City district Nazim Azam Afridi, while expressing the determination to monitor anti-social elements, said that the district government would constitute a 10-member committee to control prices and quality of items of daily use during Ramazan.
