KHAIRPUR, Oct 19: Sindh Minister for Irrigation Syed Sadaruddin Shah Rashidi has said that district governments are subordinate to the provincial government, but unfortunately, district governments think themselves to be above the provincial government and the law.

Speaking at a reception here on Saturday night, he criticized the Khairpur district government and said an inquiry would be initiated into the utilization of funds by the said government.

Referring to the registration of water theft cases at Kot Diji and Faiz Ganj stations, he said representatives of the Pakistan People’s Party were trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill.

He further said that strict action would be taken against irrigation officials if water was not provided to tail-end growers.

On the occasion, about 10 PPP activists announced that they were joining the Muslim League.

HIGHWAYMEN: About six highwaymen in police uniforms deprived passengers of various vehicles of their valuables near Thari Mirwah on Saturday night.

The accused held hostage 20 passengers and tied them with ropes near Arif Haji village.

Meanwhile, an army man, Abdul Karim Sehto, resident of Sofai Sehta village, was on his way from Mehrabpur with his wife when the robbers intercepted him and tried to snatch his motorcycle.

On being offered resistance, they opened fire as a result of which Sehto’s wife, Naseem, died on the spot while he was seriously injured and taken to the Mehrabpur Hospital.

Later, the bandits took away a motorcycle and thousands of rupees from the passengers and escaped.

DACOITS: Some unidentified armed men attacked Siyal village near Rapri and robbed gold ornaments, cash and other valuables on Saturday night.

The men opened fire when some villagers offered resistance. Soni, Mohammad Mithal, Mohammad Qasim Siyal and Mohammad Jurial Siyal were injured as a result.

According to the villagers, dacoit Mumtaz Narejo’s gang attacked their village.

VICTIMS: Workers of the Pakistan People’s Party staged a protest rally in Thari Mirwah and Faiz Ganj on Sunday against registration of cases against PPP workers.

They termed the registration of cases as political victimization and demanded immediate withdrawal of the cases.

PPP activists: People’s Party Parliamentarian MNA Manzoor Hussain Wassan has condemned the registra-tion of cases against PPP activists and councillors of Kot Diji and Faiz Ganj talukas.

Talking to newsmen here on Saturday at the Wassan House, he said police were pressurizing the Awam Dost councillors to win their support for the Taluka Nazim seat.

SDO irrigation Faiz Ganj had registered a case against 29 PPP workers including three UC Naib Nazims of the Awam Dost Panel with Faiz Ganj police under the Irrigation Act on charges of water theft.

SIT IN: A large number of PPP workers observed a sit-in in Pucca Chang against the registration of false cases against growers, Naib Nazims and councillors. The protesters demanded withdrawal of all these cases.
