KARACHI, Oct 17: A Young World “Karachi — City of Our Future, 2003” competition, organized by Dawn, opens on Saturday at the City School PAF Chapter, Karachi. It will be attended by schoolchildren from over 80 schools of Karachi, falling within the age group of 10 to 17 years.

The competition boasts a wide range of exciting educational activities/contests geared towards inspiring and communicating the vision of a better Karachi to the younger generation of the city. It will include multidimensional creative contests, like designing an ad campaign promoting Karachi, a mural painting contest on painting Karachi as the children see it, and a “Kolachi Catwalk” fashion show depicting Karachi’s multi-culturalism.

Educational contests will cover essay writing, skits, debating and general knowledge competitions and getting-to-know Karachi activities (like reading the city map, solving crossword puzzles, jumbled word exercises). The Pakistan Scrabble Association will also organize an inter-school scrabble competition.

In addition to these, the event will hold creative workshops on recycling and jewellery-making, and an environmental workshop on “Greener Karachi”.

The range of entertainment will cover face painting, food and film and magic shows. The grand finale will be on Sunday when the winners of each competition and each participant will be awarded prizes and certificates by Bilal Maqsood and Faisal Kapadia of Strings fame.

The panel of judges will include established figures from the fields of fashion designing, architecture, photography and other walks of life.
