ISLAMABAD: Pakistan won another silver medal in weightlifting at the Fifth Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa when Abdul Rehman came second in the 77kg category on Wednesday.

According to Pakistan Weightlifting Federation (PWLF) vice-president Rashid Malik who is also the chief-de-mission of the Pakistan contingent at the Games, Rehman overcame a stiff challenge of competitors from Cameroon, Scotland and hosts Samoa.

Rehman’s silver followed Talha Talib’s runner-up finish in the 55kg category two days ago. He lifted 106kg in snatch and 136kg in clean and jerk for a total of 242kg.

It was a second medal for Rehman at international stage after he won gold at the Asian Youth Weightlifting Championships in Doha in January.

PWLF president Mian Mohammad Aslam and Punjab Weightlifting Association chairman Hafiz Suleman Butt congratulated Rehman on winning the silver medal.

Rehman’s feat helped Pakistan shake off a dismal Tuesday at the event when its boxing team crashed out in the first round and another weightlifter Mohammad Usman narrowly missed out on bronze in the 62kg category.

Also on Wednesday, Pakistan saw their lone hope in tennis crash out. Muzammil Murtaza lost the men’s singles quarter-final to follow Rida Khalid, who lost in the women’s singles first-round on Tuesday, out of the competition.
