KARACHI: The Zaman Town police on Thursday arrested a man posing as a Rangers colonel and booked him under terror charges for demanding money to get a detained suspect released from the custody of the law enforcement agency.

The police arrested the ‘fake’ colonel while he was making a deal with relatives of a suspect held by law enforcers, said Korangi SSP Naeem Ahmed Shaikh.

The imposter was arrested at a house in Korangi 1 ½ , he added.

The Zaman Town police registered an FIR (415/2015) against imposter Raza Malik and his colleague, Sohail, under Sections 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 386 (extortion by putting a person in fear of death or grievous hurt), 170 (personating a public servant), 171 (wearing garb or carrying token used by public servant with fraudulent intent) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

The case was registered on a complaint of Jehanzeb Zaman. The complainant reported that Raza Malik, who was better known as ‘Colonel Ali’, had demanded Rs400,000 from him to get Imran alias Lamba released from the Rangers custody, according to the police officer.

Two other suspects, Liaquat and Nazim, were absconders, he said, adding that the police had heard that Imran belonged to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement.
