HYDERABAD, Oct 16: Pakistan People’s Party-SB activists marched from the Liberty Market to the press club here on Thursday to protest against construction of the greater Thal canal, Kalabagh dam and other projects on the River Indus.
They were led by Sindh PPP-SB president Meehan Khan Rind, Ali Mohammad Sonaro and other party leaders.
Speaking on the occasion, party leader Sonaro said the participation of hundreds of people in the march had proved that the people of Sindh were against the construction of the projects.
He regretted that the rulers were continuing with the projects despite huge protests by the people.
Mr Sonaro demanded that lands allotted to generals and feudal lords should be taken back from them and given to peasants.
The Sindh PPP-SB chief said the Kalabagh dam, Thal canal and other water projects would convert rich agricultural land of Sindh into a desert.
He said the very existence of the country depended on the guarantee of equal rights to the federating units.
He warned that his party would resist conspiracies against Sindh.
Sindh PPP-SB general-secretary Younus Bhaan feared that lands of Sindh would be rendered barren after the construction of the projects.
He said he his party would wage a struggle to protect the rights of Sindh.
Ali Mohammad Jamali, Ali Gohar Chandio, Ghaffar Chandio, Munawar Chandio and Peeral Majeedano also spoke on the occasion.
The party adopted several resolutions, calling upon multinational companies to provide jobs to local people and demanding punishment to the killers of Mir Murtaza Bhutto and his companions. It also demanded the arrest of the murderers of journalist Amir Bakhsh Brohi and enactment of a law against the Karo-kari custom.
