HYDERABAD, Oct 16: Growers of the Tando Ghulam Ali Shakh have threatened that they will launch a protest movement from Oct 25 if water is not released in the channel.
Speaking at a news conference at the press club here on Thursday, Syed Baboo Shah, Anwar Malang, Iqbal and Shahnawaz said five watercourses of People’s Party Parliamentarians MPA Mir Mohammad Hassan had been closed for the last 27 days, terming it political victimization.
They said standing crops in areas located in the Tando Ghulam Ali Shakh command were also being affected for water shortage.
They said Mr Hassan had installed 12 tube-wells at his lands and was even supplying water to growers from his tube-wells.
They regretted that while irrigation engineers had closed the watercourses of the MPA, they were taking no notice of watercourses tampered with by other landlords.
They said growers of tail-end areas were facing acute shortage of water but irrigation authorities were not releasing water to their lands.
They said thousands of growers were waiting for a protest call from MPA Hasan.
Answering a question, they said more than 200 growers were being affected due to the non-supply of irrigation water.
DEMO: Residents of Goth Mureed Sipyo held a protest demonstration outside the press club here on Thursday against alleged excesses of a local landlord.
They raised slogans against the landlord, Ghulam Nabi Junjeo, and demanded his arrest.
Talking to journalists, Saleem Pervez Sipyo, Allah Bachayo Sipyo and Noor Ali said the landlord, his son and henchmen had attacked a man, Allah Bachayo, injuring him.
They said an FIR was registered at the Tando Jam police station but the police had taken no action against the accused.
HUNGER STRIKE: A group of activists of the Sindhi Hari Tehrik observed a token hunger strike outside the press here on Thursday against the Dadu DPO and the Mahar TPO.
Talking to journalists, SHT leader Vishnumal said without any reason the Dadu police arrested the vice-president of the organization, Ghulam Mustafa Chandio, at the insistence of feudal lords.
He said the police had resorted to firing and harassed the inmates of Mr Chandio’s house early Thursday morning.
Mr Vishnumal also accused the police of taking away several cattle and Rs20,000 in cash.
He said the only fault of Mr Chandio was that he was espousing the cause of peasants.
He warned that protest demonstrations would be held throughout the province if the peasant leader was not released and the cattle were not returned.
