NSW to probe Hughes’ death

SYDNEY: The New South Wales (NSW) state government says it will conduct a coroner’s inquest into the death of Australian Test cricketer Phillip Hughes during a first-class match at the Sydney Cricket Ground last year.

The former Test batsman was struck in the side of the head by a short-pitched delivery while batting for South Australia against NSW in a Sheffield Shield match on Nov 25. Hughes, 25, died two days later without regaining consciousness.

A coroner’s court spokesman said on Friday that a date for the inquest will be set on Sept 29.

Cricket Australia has already announced a review into Hughes’ death and says it will share information with other authorities investigating the fatality.—AP
