KARACHI: Master-plan EDO reprimanded

KARACHI, Oct 15: A division bench of High Court of Sindh, comprising Justice Sabihuddin Ahmed and S. Ali Aslam Jafri, on Tuesday issued a strict warning to Syed Zaigham Jaffery, EDO, Master Plan department of the City District Government Karachi, for misleading the court by making a false statement.

The bench also held that Zaigham Jaffery named one of his subordinates Iftekhar Qaimkhani, District Officer, Master Plan, to shift responsibility while Mr Qaimkhani has no concern with the issue before the court.

The bench was seized with the hearing of a petition filed by one Mohammed Khalil who moved the court against the refusal by the defunct KDA to hand over a 400 square yard plot allotted to him in KDA Scheme-36, Block 15, Gulistan-i-Jauhar.

The bench also brushed aside an explanation given by the EDO Master Plan and said that it does not inspire any confidence.

“His conduct was highly irresponsible but keeping in view his advanced age and long service, we are taking a lenient view and restrain ourselves from exercising contempt jurisdiction”, the bench said in its order, adding that “making misleading statements or failure to follow directions could lead to very serious consequences and he must desist from doing so”.

The bench eventually dismissed the petition directing the sub- ordinate court to decide the issue as per law.

SSP ACTIVISTS PLEA: A division bench of Sindh High Court, comprising Justice Ghulam Nabi Soomro and Justice Sarmad Jalal Osmany, on Wednesday adjourned the hearing of an appeal by activists of the banned Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan against death sentence awarded to them by an STA court in a killing case.

The arguments of state attorney Sarwar Khan were partially heard as the court time was over. The court fixed Oct 20 for further hearing in the case.

The special judge of STA-III, had on Nov 27, 1995, awarded punishment to SSP activists Mansoor Ali Babar, Umer Hayat, Syed Asif Ali, Muhammad Fazil Muhammad Gulzar, Khwaja Saleemuddin and Muhammad Ahmed on charge of killing 15 persons at Imam Bargah Mehfil-i-Murtuza.—PPI
