HYDERABAD, Oct 14: Fourteen Sudanese students were injured in a clash between two groups of Sudanese students at a hotel, near the Jamshoro railway crossing, on Monday night.

Thirteen students have been picked up by the Jamshoro police following registration of a non-cognizable case.

The Jamshoro police said that the non-cognizable case was registered on the complaint of Abdul Wada, son of Ahmed, who claimed that he along with his friends were sitting at a hotel when their fellow nationals attacked them.

Police said that those injured in the clash were Ismail, Sami, Ali, Hassan, Wahi, Abdul Rehman, Amjad, Moatiz, Yasir, Abu Bakar, Ibrahim, Usman, Yahya and Ali Rehman.

Police claimed to have picked up six students — Hassan, Fakhruddin, Aatim, Rasheed, Raheem and Mohammad Saleh. They were picked up in different raids as they were studying in the Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, University of Sindh, and the Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences.

The injured were taken to the LUMHS Hospital, Jamshoro branch.

As the news reached the Sudanese students residing in Qasimabad, Latifabad, Kotri and Hyderabad, they rushed to the hospital and held a protest demonstration outside its casualty ward.

Police said that the actual cause of the incident could not be ascertained because the students were avoiding to provide details.

The Jamshoro police, however, added that an outsider, Hassan, who was also a Sudanese, and other outsiders were the bone of contention between the two groups as the complainant and his friends used to object on outsiders’ visiting their campus.

Police claimed that political differences also existed between the students.

The additional DPO, Dadu, said that students at the campus belonged to both the ruling and opposition parties of Sudan, and added that the Sudan Embassy gave relaxation to the students of the ruling party whereas students belonging to opposition parties had to suffer on various accounts.

The official said that 13 students had been detained; seven of them were admitted in the hospital.

He said that a formal FIR would be registered because medical certificates had been issued by the LUMHS Hospital, and added that mostly opposition parties’ students had been injured.
