Reham won't attend PTI events in future, says Imran

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Tuesday lashed out on Twitter against "attacks" on wife Reham Khan following the NA-19 by-polls.
He said he was "appalled & disgusted by attacks on Reham" after the party's candidate faced defeat at the hands of PML-N leader Babar Nawaz during the by-elections for the Haripur constituency.

He defended his wife's visit to the constituency to campaign for PTI candidate Raja Aamir Zaman saying, "Reham has only attended PTI functions at the constant insistence of PTI members".

He stated that while Reham would not hold any positions in the party, contest elections on a PTI ticket, hold any position in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government or be given official protocol, she was "politicised".
Khan also said that the PTI was "opposed to all forms of nepotism".

The PTI chief claimed that one of his party's greatest achievements was encouraging women and the youth to engage in political activity, as it galvanised them to "fight effectively for their rights and against injustice",

Khan said Reham already had too much on her plate, especially with her social work with street children, and that she would not attend any PTI events in the future.

He said his wife was with him in Karachi during the NA-246 by-polls because the party wanted to "challenge the fear factor" and encourage women voters to cast their ballots in the election.

Following Imran's outburst, Reham Khan tweeted her support for her husband's political aspirations.
She said she was not interested in contesting elections as "those who do haven't made Pakistan any better".

The former journalist and talk-show host said she had long declined invitations to join political parties ─ even before she married Imran.

PML-N candidate Babar Nawaz won the NA-19 seat in the Aug 16 by-polls with an unofficial number of 89,209 votes, while PTI candidate Raja Amir Zaman bagged 63,127 votes.

I think, the most important is that she should check her interviews and only expose to media as is suitable to her position. PTI supporters would not accept Reham in active politics as on all social media surveys it shows that over 50% PTI voters opposed her in politics and felt decieved by IK.

It is sad to see country's priorities. Reham is a symbol of active participation of women in country's affairs. It should be encouraged. She is not a PTI office holder which should be discouraged. She is not using govt protocol or getting paid.
I repeat she is a symbol of women being in the forefront of country's affairs. That is a good thing. Not be a office holder just because her husband is the Chairman. That would be a bad thing. But she is not.

She is a bright mind and well spoken individual. All that is needed is work her way up the party cadre. She is a breath of fresh air and a voice in sanity in the party.

I am a great fan of IK and for me there has been tremendous benefits of the dharna as N league was completely ignorant of the people and were very pro Indians but after the dharna things have changed all together. There was no doubt that rigging took place and it was very evident in the video clips but IK has taken it to a level that me and Lot of my colleagues are fed up of it...khan Sb you need to move forward as you are going towards a dead end....we want to see a completely different KP in your tenure otherwise your party will bear loss like ANP and MMA.

Nothing wrong with Reham accompanying Imran in public gatherings, happens everywhere. People seem to have different standards for PTI than for PPP and N - both of whom are dominated by families - yet, the criticism is saved for Reham's appearance in a jalsa. Hypocritical.

One thing which ppl tend to ignore is that in KPK specially all the opposition parties choose a single candidate when running against PTI. In the national elections this situation will change as all parties will stand their separate candidates, hence the anti PTI vote will scatter making victory likely for PTI. 63k odd vote for a single party fighting against all the other parties combined is no mean feat. Having said that there is no doubt that PTI has lost some of its steam and internal difference have cropped up in the party. The upcoming local elections r very important, as whosoever has office bearers elected in the upcoming local bodies elections will find it easy to campaign and get voters as they will have local support network ready. If PTI doesnt do well in that, they wont be able to win the next elections or it will be very difficult to do so.

IK this is a really good step. Reham Khan should rightly focus all her energies on social issues and work with NGOs and should avoid media as much as possible. IK should continue to strengthen party and work on KPK. PMLN has got a proper cyber trolls wing which would criticize you whatever you do so please don't give attention to what they say. 2. There is deep resentment in Hazara over how Peshawar treats us. In the budget, Hazara never gets funds proportional to its population and development needs. We are ignored for important positions and our demands for a separate province are ignored. PTI has done nothing for Hazara division; if you dont believe us please visit Haripur and Abbottabad and see for yourself.

I dont think there is anything wrong in Reham attending such events, but in my opinion what has really hurt Pti is the judicial commission report, Pti members returning back to the assemblies, and because of Pti entering into a reconciliatory mode, and sitting down with those he asked his followers to oppose. If he is part of the same system, people who really want a change in our political system, will go back to their old ways, i.e. not to vote. In order to get these people out of their homes and to fill up polling station, Imran needs to distinguish and distance himself from the existing system.

Instead of trying to find scapegoats, PTI should try to find out the reasons behind this debacle. Is it due to their declining popularity, improved show from PML-N, people getting tired of things not working out in KPK as promised by IK or people confused by Justice Wajihuddin disclosures about PTI qabza group. Either way IK has time to ponder and plan and prepare his strategy before the LB elections. IK has lost a great opportunity created through the Dharnas to come clean about the affairs of his party. The grouping within the party is actually causing more damage to it than it's rivals and playing into the hands of PML-N. It's about time to put their own house in order.

Reham must have many positive characteristics, but the perception she had created recently of herself was of the Deputy Leader of the PTI, instead of being the Leader's spouse.
Those two are very different positions - and somewhere along the lines things got extremely blurred.
Best for her now is to stick in the background and focus on her social work - similar to what Michelle Obama or Samantha Cameron do in the USA and UK respectively.
Reham can help PTI a whole lot through her social work, and not via social media - as currently her social media posts seems to be far too political.
Naya Pakistan requires a new rulebook.
You can't say we are building a new country whilst at the same time copying unethical behaviours practiced by the old guard.
Let's clean up Pakistan from the top to bottom - and the first step to that must be "No Nepotism"!!!
But this should not mean that she can't attend PTI events - she just shouldn't make political statements.

Culture of Hazara id different than Sindh and Punjab. People do not like women to be in politics. I have never seen women candidate winning on open seats therefore I would suggest Mrs. Imran to be housewife rather than contesting election or participating in politics in Hazara.

Pakistanis , long used to military dictatorships, rural and urban feudalism will take some time to adjust to the message of I.K.
I.K. himself needs to wade in the mud of Pakistani politics a bit longer to learn the dirt and filth that lubricates it.
PTI losing the bye-election in Haripur and conceding defeat is a good thing. Hopefully would learn some positive lessons. In the next general election he will need to emerge as wiser as well as sincere. It is better that RK keeps out of this process voluntarily.

Actually on Twitter she said herself that she is not interested in running for elections - and those that do have not made it any better. Unwise choice of words - implies in my view that she is labelling all politicians, including PTI candidates, as mediocre.
She claims to be a dual-national, and as such is ineligible to stand for public office.
Despite what she says about being offered party tickets before marrying IK, she does not have any real political constituency of her own.
If she runs for election now, she will effectively confirm that she is an opportunist now and PTI will totally lose their credibility as the anti-corruption/anti-nepostism party.
But then again, this is Pakistan - where politicians will try and convince you that what they are doing themselves is acceptable. Whilst, the same politicians will label others as being corrupt for doing something identical.
PTI is unravelling fast - maybe that is a good thing. That way they can get it right and win in 2018.

In fact all other parties are losing except PMLn. Generally political parties lose their popularity when they are in power but in case of PMLn it is other way which proves that people have confidence in its policies.

1) The wife supporting the political husband (and vice versa) is to be commended and even encouraged.
2) However, the wife should not act as a proxy for the husband and make political statements.
In Reham's case, she was about to graduate with a postgraduate degree in point 2 - when all that is required is starting a postgraduate course in point 1.
I am sure you'll agree that certain boundaries shouldn't be crossed.
Hilary Clinton is a politician in her own right now, but when Bill Clinton was the President, Hilary took a back seat. That's what Reham should be doing now.
Everything else - her undoubted political ambitions - will naturally fall into place afterwards.

In fact, you surely must have realised that I made a sarcastic reference to Reham's fake postgraduate degree in my last post.
Also, my last sentence was implying that despite what Reham says, she is just a political opportunist.
Sometimes, you have to read between the lines to get the message.
The point I was trying to make was that even though Hilary was effectively the First Lady of the entire world, she didn't decide to appoint herself Deputy president of the USA, as that role is already taken up by someone else (namely the VP).

Who is Imran trying to be--her guardian or savior or the master of her destiny? I don't see anything wrong in Reham being in politics. But from practical point of view, I would recommend her to stay out of practical politics and do not run for any office.
She should maintain her celebrity status. She will be more effective that way.
The world history is full of instances of husband and wife taking part in politics. There are such instances in Pakistan: Fatema Jinnah, Benazir Bhutto, Marium Nawaz, etc. We have presently running for president, Hilory Clinton.

I fully support Reham Khan as a office bearer in the Government. I wish she would fight for the people and Women & Children. She is an educated, classy and open minded lady and that's what we need to turn this around. Although IK may be politically correct to not allow Reham to attend any events, but do not agree with IK on this.. Democracy states that that best person be allowed to serve the people. Reham is best candidate for that. Thousand time better then the uneducated political appointees and elected MNAs and Senators. Shame on people of Pakistan who cant stand an intelligent person who can bring about the change Pakistan needs badly. Reham " You GO GIRL"..With you 100%.

I see nothing wrong with Reham accompanying IK in political jalsas or making bold statements (she has every right as citizen of the country). This happens in all democratic societies incl. the US and UK. But
Reham does not hold any PTI position and therefore should resist VVIP protocol (apart from basic security which she needs as wife of a party head in a volatile country like ours). That much I agree with.
I actually do NOT agree with IK here.
Why should Reham be barred from politics? We have examples of Fatima Jinnah, BB & Maryam Nawaz in politics. Why should IK dictate to her what she should/shouldn't be doing? Reham is a bright and intelligent lady and she can speak and decide for herself. This only happens in a male-dominated society. As long as she doesn't take over the party through a 'will' or without contesting party elections what is so wrong with that?

Not sure, if IK would had said the same thing in case NA19 seat was won by PTI. It is just a reaction to the backlash and blaming someone as a scapegoat. Also running for elections will only be possible if she surrenders her British citizenship which will never happen. Hypocrisy at its best!!

Reham was requested by PTI candidate to deliver a speech as she belongs to that area otherwise she holds no party position and does not take any benefits from party. Media kept saying that Reham had formally started her political career and even claiming that she would contest elections on PTI ticket from NA19!! All was nothing but a hogwash
Now that Imran has asked her not to even attend rallies as it upsets some narrow-minded people in our male-dominated society, he gets criticised by some for making Reham a scapegoat for the election defeat! Some people can never win no matter what they do.
Samantha Cameron, wife of British PM David Cameron, does not hold any position within the Conservative party but she was actively campaigning for her husband before the May 2015 general election.

I am not an IK supporter and voted for NS. But on this story, I really do not see the fuss. PTI is a has been party, that is why they lost the elections. People have seen through IK and that although he talks about change, he is not sincere about bringing change. This Reham issue is a sideshow and unnecessary.

@gerry dcunha pakistanis have no problems with women supporting their husbnads or being politicians in their own rights. But Pakistani women hate a man who dictates to his wife. This is not the average man problem. This IK's problem with his latest acquisition finding a voice and sharing a his space with her in the papers. He is probably obsessing over every comment wnd tweet to do with this. Poor Reham life at home must be hell right now and i dont think she knows how to make rotis!

Campaigning is one thing - thousands of people that don't hold party office are 'campaigning' across the globe every day.
There is a big difference between campaigning and making political statements on TV, issuing disparaging comments and controversial tweets.
So please don't compare Reham with Samatha Cameron.
