PESHAWAR: The city police claimed have arrested two terrorists from the limits of Paharipura police station who were allegedly planning to attack public places in the provincial metropolis on the evening of Independence Day.

Police officials told Dawn that the arrests were made from Pakha Ghulam village in the outskirts of the city. A senior police official requesting anonymity said that both terrorists were nabbed in a raid by the special operation unit of the city police, which also recovered two jackets attached with 30 hand grenades, and two pistols.

The official said that the suspects belonged to the banned Lashkar-i-Islam of Khyber Agency. However, he said that they were not suicide bombers. The suspects have been shifted to an undisclosed location for interrogation.

In Kohat, the security forces and police in a joint raid have arrested three Afghan refugees for having links with terrorists from a house in Ublan area. As many as 88 other suspects were arrested during the operation.

The joint raid was conducted on information that the alleged facilitators were present in a house in Ublan area. The forces raided the house and arrested three Afghan refugees. They were shifted to an unknown location for interrogation.

The first ever strike and strategic operation in Kohat city was carried out at Ublan and Ghamkol refugee camps, old bus stand, hotels, inns, residential plazas, flats and the cantonment.

The operation was launched in the evening of Aug 13. Four Kalashnikovs, three repeaters, nine pistols, two rifles and two shot guns were also recovered during the operation.

The suspects, including refugees and non-locals staying in Kohat for no purpose, were arrested and handed over to the respective police stations where FIRs had been registered against them under the 14 Foreign Act and criminal law.
