KAKUL, Oct 11: Prime Minister Zafarullah Jamali said on Saturday that Pakistan wanted to live in peace but also knew how to defend itself.

In an apparent reference to the acquisition of early warning airborne radar system by India from Israel, Prime Minister Jamali said: “New defence pacts are being signed in our neighbourhood.”

He, however, warned: “Pakistan knows how to defend itself and how to live honourably in the world. We should not seek war but at the same time remain prepared for any eventuality.”

The prime minister was addressing the cadets at the passing-out parade of 108th PMA Long Course and Integrated Course 27, here at the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA).

He urged the young officers to “make ready your strength in peacetime to thwart aggression to ensure peace and prosperity in the country and the world at large.”

Mr Jamali said Pakistan was passing through a critical period. “To encounter internal and external threats posed to our integrity and sovereignty, we require to be extra vigilant and prepared for any sacrifice to guard our geographical frontiers.”

He said the national and international scenario had placed added responsibilities on the armed forces.

“We need to match our actions with the gravity of these testing times to help the nation attain its rightful place in the modern world.”

The prime minister said during his recent visit to the United States, the US administration, army and the United Nations appreciated the role of the Pakistani armed forces.

As an ideological state, he said, Pakistan was bound to have its share of challenges. “Our hearts must be touched by the true spirit of Islam, only then can we measure up to these challenges.”—APP
