LAHORE, Oct 11: The national council of the Pakistan Democratic Party is due to meet here on Sunday (today) to choose a new party president and successor of Nawabzada Nasrullah Khan, who headed the party for 30 years and died of a heart ailment on Sept 26.

The council comprises 300 members, but the meeting will start if the strength is sufficient to form quorum.

Under the party constitution, nobody can offer himself as candidate and council members propose candidates after mutual consultations. In case more than one candidate is in the field, election will be held.

It is said that Nawabzada’s son Mansoor Khan or acting president Rana Nazrur Rehman may be considered for the top post.

According to information secretary Khwaja Izhar, the 22-member working committee appointed by Nawabzada Nasrullah Khan ceased to exist with the death of the party president. Now, he said, the new president will nominate a new working committee.

The working committee comprises 33 members, but the Nawabzada had nominated only 22 members.
