HYDERABAD, Oct 11: The Pakistan Medical Association has offered its support to specialist doctors who have threatened that they will resign if their due promotions are not sanctioned by the government.
Talking to Dawn, Sindh PMA president Dr Noor Mohammad Memon said the announcement by the Specialists Doctor Forum chairman that 400 specialist doctors would resign in protest against the inordinate delay in their promotions should serve as an eye-opener for those who were responsible for the delay.
He demanded that the government not only should promote specialists but also extend them more incentives.
He said a secondary health setup should also be given for healthcare of rural population. He said this would lessen the burden on tertiary medical institutions.
Referring to problems being faced by contract doctors, Dr Memon said their problem was that they even could not resign as they had become overage for service elsewhere and were also ineligible for post-graduation. He said they had attempted self-immolation on two occasions.
MUSHAIRA: A grand Urdu-Sindhi Aalami Mushaira was held at the gymkhana on Thursday.
The poetry recital programme was organized by “The Combine” and the district administration.
Renowned poet Raghib Muradabadi presided over the Mushaira, while the Sindh minister for excise and taxation, Rauf Siddiqui, was the chief guest.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Siddiqui said the cultural and literary atmosphere, which used to be the hallmark of this historic city, had been restored.
Poets from America, Hanif Afgar and Masroor Jawaid and Nazar Niazi from Bangladesh were special attraction of the event.
Prominent poets who recited their poems included Himayat Ali Shair, Khalish Muzaffar, Meem Sheen Aalam, Imdad Hussaini, Hyder Jalisi, Prof Inayat Ali Khan and others.
The absence of Indian poets such as Jagan Nath Azad and others was a big disappointment for the poetry lovers.
