RAWALPINDI: The Punjab police have been directed to deploy two well-trained commandoes at rooftop and entry gate of police stations across the province to not only check escapes but keep an eye on people’s movement.
The directive was issued by the inspector general, Mushtaq Ahmed Sukhera. He also directed the divisional police chiefs and district police officers to visit police stations on regular basis to inspect security arrangements there.
The purpose of the security around police stations was to prevent escapes from police custody which were on the increase in Punjab.
He directed that each RPO would conduct two formal and DPO two formal and two informal inspections of police station in a month. The visits will ensure proper maintenance of record and upkeep of police station.
According to Police Rules of 1934, all the police officers ranking from IGP to DSP will visit of police stations and inspect the working of police station staff and what he had observed during his visit.
No one other than the police officer or the district magistrate is authorised to see or read the said register lying in the police station.
Police Rule also suggested that the gazetted police officer (below the rank of CPO and DPO) could conduct inspection of the police station twice in a year. And the police officers of the rank of CPO and DPO could conduct inspection of the police stations or police posts only once in a year.
