Champions Trophy: It's Pakistan versus West Indies for the last spot

Bangladesh beat South Africa by seven wickets in Mirpur on Sunday to level the three-match ODI series at 1-1 and secure qualification to the 2017 Champions Trophy.
The result in Bangladesh now means the battle for the final spot in the eight-team tournament is squarely between Pakistan and West Indies.
Even if Bangladesh lose their third and final ODI against South Africa, it is no longer possible for both Pakistan and West Indies to pass their points tally before the September cut-off date.
Azhar Ali's Pakistan side are current playing a five-match series in Sri Lanka and they will meet the West Indies in a tri-series also featuring hosts Zimbabwe in August and September.
Pakistan will need to ensure they come out on top in Sri Lanka to keep their Champions Trophy hopes alive before they look too far ahead though.
Pakistan have played in all editions of the Champions Trophy since the tournament's inception in 1998. It is an ICC event they are yet to win, having made it to the semi-finals in 2000, 2004 and 2009.
Australia and India are two most successful teams in the Champions Trophy with two title wins each.

@USN Look at the performance they played against minions and win, PCB is responsible for such position of pak team, the players are not selected on merit., After amir and anwer no openers are found, in middle order after Inzi & Yohana no replicable batsman come, in all-rounder they drop Razak,Arfat & Azhar and they played Afridi who never showed seriousness.

Without Pakistan the champions trophy in England will be colder than arctic ice. Why cannot Champions Trophy add one more spot for a team from Netherland, Kenya, Canada, Afghanistan, UAE etc.? Let there be 10 teams playing.

I hope they don't make it to the champions trophy so Waqar Younis's incompetency and the complacency and injustice of PCB is exposed to one and all.
Kuch Paane Kay Liye Kuch Khona Parta Hai. In this case to achieve greatness and long term success we have to suffer some loses that will help us get rid of the dead weight in the form of Waqar Younis.

@Iqbal : Learn to appreciate good things. Your perception about Pakistan Cricket is based on hopelessness. As you mentioned " Kuch Paanay k liyay Kuch Khona Parrta hay" That's what we are doing right now. Pakistan team with some new talent is now gradually regaining it's position. Waqar Younus is a Gem and working really hard with the young team despite of some unfortunate injuries we are doing well and to get the winning combination we will need some more time. Few more wins and I am sure you will start loving the team Pakistan once again.

Who cares about CT. It is on the edge of getting eliminated soon. Chill people..it's not world cup omission. Pak was not going to win CT even if qualified and Pakistan dipping to 8 or 9 or 10 in ODIs is not conspiracy but Pak players fault.

I would not worry at all, PAK fans, based on our ODI performance in the last year, we do not deserve to be in the CT. But as a PAK fan, i would love us to be there, a word of advice for our BAN fans, in a years time PAK will have climbed the ODI rankings, as their new ODI team looks solid, but unfortunately BAN will still be where they are. So make the most of it.

Don't complain and blame others. Mediocre efforts bring mediocre results. If you rely on your performance than luck then there is a much better chance to succeed. Who is conspiring against Pakistan team? The Pakistan team itself! The team is notorious to dig itself in a hole and then work very hard to come out of it. Sometimes they succeed and other times they don't. Champions Trophy is one such situation.

This situation may prove in Pakistan favor if they qualified. In Pakistan it always take some tragedy to do the right thing, and in this case Pakistan current risk of not making to Champions Trophy may force PCB to select players based on merit for SL series and ZB series. Once they select players, as we saw Pakistan playing Sarfaraz, Rizwan, Yasir in ODI, Anwar, and Babar Azam, and if these players perform then it will not be easy to drop them for Champion Trophy.

Not sure why Champions Trophy has become such a big deal. Is it not the same tournament ICC once thought to scrape. The real thing is keep winning and sit towards top of the table by the time Champions Trophy comes, which is still too far away. It will be a good reading to see where the teams sit in the rankings when the tournament is actually played.

At last Bangladesh is winning home matches now. Hopefully, they will start winning some away matches by CT 2017 and would be a competitive team. I am pretty sure their seam bowling would be effective on English pitches, but their batting needs to improve a lot in foreign conditions.
BTW, I don't get why the results are counted only till Sep '15. This is not the olympics for which you have to prepare for a long time to stage and hence know before hand who will participate.

Anyone who watched Bangladesh play against Pakistan, India and the last South Africa ODI, could not but be impressed with their technical superiority in batting, bowling and fired up fielding. Doesn't matter which country one belongs to, the skill and dedication must be admired, this is not to say that one cannot have feelings for their team.

I dont like this idea of dragging to the last spot. if you are not performing well, you shouldn't be part of champions trophy some other deserving team should get the chance. We have been seeing Pakistan's degrading performance for a long time and now other teams are taking over... so be it. Dropping out of competition will give some soul searching to Pakistan team.

Hey folks, no need to bash our Bangladeshi brothers who support Pakistan cricket through thick n thin. Let's all focus on the positive side of our Greenshirts performance in Sri Lanka, where our guys have bounced back with sheer determination.
FYI, no point in focusing on the CT, since it's still a ways to go before all the numbers are in .. so let's hope and pray for our Greenshirts to keep up the winning streak and surpass themselves to win all out in SL! This i very strange criteria for points.If Bangla Desh loses to South Africa the series of ODIs they shall be still qualifying range.If Pakistan loses to W Indies they shall be out of tournament.I think it is just to keep their favourite teams at all cost and to keep Pakistan out in any way.

It is our subcontinent cuture to blame others for their own failure. WI-PAK-ZIM arranged tri series to take BAN out from CT 2017. The recent win of BAN over SA made their plan unsuceesful. BAN has to work very hard to reach upto this level. Congrates BAN.
Pakistan is a better team than WI. Hope it will enter into CT 2017 by their own merit. Good luck Pakistan
