KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples Party on Monday organised a mass prayer at the shrine of Abdullah Shah Ghazi in the city's Clifton area where special prayers were offered for rain in Karachi, which has been gripped by a fatal heatwave for over a week now.

Prayers held at the shrine were attended by the local PPP leadership who were joined by a number of citizens.

Speaking on the occasion, PPP's Karachi division president Najmi Alam asked the federal government to take notice of K-Electric's deteriorating performance and demanded measures to improve the current power situation in Pakistan's largest city.

Over 1,200 people perished in Karachi alone during the past week as the province languished in the grips of a searing heatwave. Although the heatwave has eased since then, 105 deaths were reported on Thursday.

Take a look: Majority of Sindh heatwave victims were homeless: minister.

The province has struggled with water scarcity and power outages, while hospitals and other healthcare facilities are overburdened with patients and morgues overflowing with dead bodies. At least 40,000 have been admitted to hospitals since the heatwave began.
