GUJRANWALA, Oct 6: A five-member gang of robbers-cum-murderers, including the ring leader, escaped from a private van when they were being escorted by police to Wazirabad tehsil kutchery on Monday.
Wazirabad Saddar police had arrested the gangsters a few weeks back and detained them in the central jail.
The police were escorting the outlaws, including their ring leader Abbas alias Abbaso, to Wazirabad by the private van to produce them before court. Near Nizamabad on GT Road, the outlaws started thrashing a police guard, snatched his official rifle and escaped.
The presence of Saddar SI Ashfaq Ahmad on the vehicle also could not prevent the safe escape of the outlaws.
DPO Saud Aziz, additional SP Shahid Hanif and Wazirabad ASP Waqar Ahmad Chohan along with a heavy police contingent hastened to the spot and directed the raiding teams to chase the outlaws and arrest them. The raiding parties, led by the Wazirabad ASP, besieged the Chenab bela where the outlaws reported to have taken shelter.
Meanwhile, the police guard on duty was taken into custody.
