JUI-F chief criticizes Musharraf

LAHORE, Oct 5: Gen Pervez Musharraf is dishonouring his negotiation team by backing out of government’s own proposal on uniform issue, says Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) secretary-general Maulana Fazlur Rahman.

He was talking to newsmen after attending the marriage ceremony of Hafiz Riaz Durrani’s daughter here on Sunday.

He said it was the government that had suggested making operative Article 63 (D) of the Constitution from Dec 31, 2004, to fulfil the MMA’s demand about separating the offices of the president and the army chief.

The article debars a state employee from holding a public office.

He ruled out any chance of further talks on the Legal Framework Order, saying all its constitutional aspects had been comprehensively discussed.

“We have taken care of Gen Musharraf as much as wasneeded and nothing could be done now if he dislikes some things.”

He told a questioner that direct negotiations with Gen Musharraf could have been possible only during the talks and now there was no need of holding further parleys.

Urging Gen Musharraf not to take himself as the most wise person, the Maulana said he was not indispensable for the country.

“He should take advantage of the agreement reached between the MMA and his own negotiators.”

Answering a question, he said as Gen Musharraf wanted to hold the political office of the president, his tone should also sound like politicians.

The Maulana said the Waziristan operation, being conducted in the area under the control of the federal government, was wrong.

He denied that the NWFP government had been taken into confidence over it.

To another question, he said religious scholars’ decree on sending troops to Iraq was still valid. “No father or mother can send his or her son to fight for the protection of infidels.”

Binyamin: All opposition parties are poised to launch an anti-Musharraf movement as the general has trampled the national pride, says Punjab PML-N vice-president Binyamin Rizvi.

In a press statement on Sunday, he said the growing collaboration between retired army officials and the FBI was an unwelcome development which would increase the US influence in Pakistan.

He said Gen Musharraf’s ouster was imperative for the solidarity of the country. He said the general was accepting even unfair US demands which could land the country in a difficult situation in the days to come.

He did not give much importance to the unification of various PML factions, saying only the popular faction stood the future.
