PM Nawaz forms cabinet committee on relief efforts for Rohingya

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday constituted a federal cabinet committee to suggest measures and relief efforts that Pakistan can undertake for Myanmar's Rohingya Muslims.
The committee members include Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, adviser on national and foreign affairs Sartaj Aziz and special assistant to the premier Tariq Fatemi.
The committee will meet tomorrow (Sunday) to deliberate on the issue of Rohingya Muslims and evaluate Pakistan's role in alleviating their misery.
In a statement today, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan lamented over the international community's inaction and "criminal silence" on the atrocities in Myanmar. He slammed human rights organisations for not taking appropriate measures to highlight the persecution and genocide of the Rohingya people.

"The silence of such bodies raises serious questions about the utility and effectiveness of international forums that proclaim themselves as upholders, defenders and promoters of human rights and democratic values", Nisar said.
The interior minister made an impassioned appeal to the United Nations, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the entire Muslim world and regional powers to not close their eyes to the plight of the Rohingya Muslims.

He said ignorance on part of these bodies would nullify recent efforts aimed at addressing grievances of Muslims to wean away their youth falling into the traps of militants.

If any one accept it or not, time and again it is Imran Khan who will initiate an effort and them some sane voices in PMLN (Ch Nisar, Ahsan Iqbal etc) and PPP (CH. Aitizaz, Qamar Zaman Qaira, etc) will shake and wake up their leaders to do something. Hope Pakistan accelerate diplomatic efforts especially among muslim nations to pressure Burmese, since military intervention is not a viable option based on geographical complexity.

Good step! Many will say this is not Pakistan's problem and that we should focus on internal issues, but this is a major humanitarian problem in our neighborhood and there's no reason why we shouldn't try to help as much as we can.

Brilliant. I know I do not live in Pakistan but all my family does. If we can take 3M plus Afghans for years why cannot we take some Rohingya people to come and live in Pakistan. But I must admit the Buhdist religion is no longer a religion of peace to me. The Rohingyas are suffering because they are Muslims.

This is great news indeed! Now I hope PM will form another another cabinet committee to bring back the stranded Pakistanis in Bangladesh who fought on our side and thus became unwanted in Bangladesh after the war was over.
In fact these Pakistanis should have higher priority than Rohingiyas.

It is not only Pakistan's responsibility to reach out for the rescue of Rohingya Muslim; it is a humanitarian issue and so becomes the collective responsibility of the international community to take cognizance of the situation. This issue may not be given the colour of a particular religion rather it needs to be approached on the basis of a humanitarian crisis.

It's good to raise voice about the issue in Burma but at the same time I wish our governments can allow stranded pakistanis in Bangladesh to come to their own country. Secondly, when people or government in Pakistan wants to move afghan refugees out of pakistan all international organizations starts critizing the move where are these so called champions of human rights and finally what about our own people in Pakistan can those who are not rich and powerful get justice?

While sympathies for Rohingyas are understandable, our efforts should be focused on the Biharis stranded in Bangladesh. If we deny them right to come to Pakistan then we are denying very founding values of our nationhood.

What can this committee do other than issuing statements? Looks nothing more than a PR Stunt. If the government is really serious in playing a role a committee should comprise of people like Ashraf Jahangir Qazi, Asma Jahangir, Ansar Burni who can take this up at an international level (and be heard thanks to their excellent reputation worldwide)

First of all, Pakistan should approach to OIC for convening the Summit meeting on the issue of Rohingyas.The UNO and Human Rights organizations should play their due role. Otherwise these persecuted Muslims will be fallen at the hands of Daesh-like organizations. Pakistan sould raise funds for the rendered Rohingya Muslims. Finally, Pakistan has promised to deliberate on effective help for the Rohingas.
However, countries like the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf are in a much better position to help. Also, the many Human Rights organizations of the West who can help with their elaborate network.
Some European organizations and networks are helping the helpless and poor boat people coming out of Africa they can also provide help to the Rohingas.

We whole Rohingyas love Pakistan from the core of our hearts but not today for many decades. We are whole Rohingya peoples are appealing to Honorable Prime minister & leader of muslim Ummah Nawaz Sharif to help us to solve our decades old & longstanding Rohingya issue. Better late than never, our government has at last awakend from slumber and constituted a committee. As the situation is getting worse there, Pakistan should do quick actions. We have heard Turkey has inituated humantarian work there, we should follow them or take independent action. Pakistan if necessory should consider sending troops for protection of Muslim there. Pakistan must assert itself and try to put diplomatic pressure from OIC platform and must China into confidence as it consider Burma under its sephere of influence.

OIC should have an official to report and organise help from member countries for emergencies in the world.In the past Pakistan has helped India and Nepal at the time of natural disasters.Pakistan within its resources should help the Rohingyas with food packages,medical help and other material in cooperation with other countries.If there is an institutional gap in OIC,it should be filled.

Whenever I see news reports on the plight of the Rohingya Muslims, it brings tears to my eyes. In addition to taking care of our existing IDPs and other destitutes in Pakistan, our government, and especially our Navy, should try to help the Rohingya as much as possible. They are our brothers and sisters. They are trying to escape persecution and death. We can at least provide food, water and medicine to those stranded in boats.

Pakistan should accept the boat migrants who are being turned away by Thailand and Indonesia and also give refuge to thousands of other Rohingyas from Myanmar. After all Pakistan is the center of the Muslim Ummah .
