SRINAGAR, Oct 2: Four Mujahideen and two civilians were killed in occupied Kashmir in the latest violence, police said on Thursday.

Shopkeeper Manzoor Ahmed was shot dead in broad daylight on Thursday by at least two gunmen who walked into his store at Kreeri village in the northern Baramulla district, a police spokesman said.

“The killing sparked panic in the village and people ran helter skelter,” the spokesman said.

Khazir Mohammed, a civilian who had recently quit the police force, was shot dead late on Wednesday in Wader village near Handwara township, 85kms Srinagar, the spokesman said.

He said Mujahideen were suspected in the two killings although the motives were not clear. No group claimed responsibility for the two men’s deaths.

Separately, the army on Thursday shot dead two activists of Lashkar-i-Taiba at Sonawari, 35kms north of Srinagar, a police official said.

The fighting took place only four kilometres away a function being attended by the province’s leader, Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, official sources said. Two more freedom fighters were killed in Rajouri district overnight by the army, police said.—AFP
