SRINAGAR, Oct 1: Eleven Mujahideen and two Muslim civilians were killed in violence in Kashmir as Indian and Pakistani troops traded heavy fire along the Line of Control, police said on Wednesday.

Indian troops overnight shot dead four freedom fighters along the LoC in the Gurez sector bordering Azad Kashmir after they allegedly infiltrated into occupied Kashmir, a police spokesman said.

The killings took to 19 the number of militants killed in Gurez since Sunday evening.

Another militant was shot dead in southern Kathua sector, police said.

Two Kashmiris were killed on Wednesday in a four-hour encounter in the Kandi village of Kupwara sector that erupted when troops sealed the area northwest of Srinagar on a tip-off.

Four Mujahideen died in separate encounters in the southern sectors of Doda, Anantnag and Rajouri overnight, police said. Four Indian troops were injured in these shootouts.

Police claimed suspected freedom fighters shot dead two Muslim civilians, one of them a village defence committee member, late on Tuesday in Poonch and Udhampur.

Police reported two other such clashes in Budgam and Baramulla sectors on Wednesday. “At both the places rebels managed to flee,” the spokesman said.—AFP
