Election tribunal orders thumbprint verification for Lahore's NA-128, PP-160

LAHORE: The election tribunal on Tuesday ordered the verification of thumbprints in the PP-160 and NA-128 constituencies in a petition submitted by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf's Karamat Ali Khokhar, reported DawnNews.

There are 250 polling stations in NA-128 where PML-N candidate Afzal Khokhar was elected, and 197 polling stations in PP-160 where Saiful Mulook Khokhar, also from PML-N, was elected.

The election tribunal has ordered verification of thumbprints gathered from all polling stations in these two constituencies within a month, and has ordered that a report be provided to tribunal judge Kazim Ali Malik.

The records from the polling stations will be sent to National Database and Registration Authority's (NADRA) Islamabad office, in the care of the District Returning Officer's staff.

Proceedings for verification of thumbprints are expected to commence as soon as the records reach the NADRA office.

If thumb imression are not verifiable for any reason, credit-ability of election is lost. Election commission should order fresh election and make sure that this time there there is no mistake.

I live in this constituency(NA-128 and PP-160) and every single person in this area knows the sort of influence the Khokhar brothers in question enjoy in the area. Tales of rigging are common around here. Bear in mind that the constituency in question is an urban one. We can only imagine what hell broke loose in polling stations in rural locations, where media presence is negligible and such practices are part of the norm

I think ECP should conduct such enquiries during the whole tenure of every government at least for media trial, if not judicial one(as in case of Saad rafiq) This will increase public awareness as well. And I bet these MNAs and MPAs are more scared of loosing popularity than any punishment.

@Fazal Karim If thumb impressions are not verifiable it is not the contenders fault but ECPs. ECP should not be able to punish the winning candidate for its lacking by calling elections.

Only in Pakistan they even think of verifying voters based on thumb impression post election. What a waste of resources in a poor country. Verification can only be done, before the voter is allowed to vote.

@shabbir..... If thumb verification is not possible because of non standard ink and papers, ECP or the suppliers of material should be jailed for life or they should expose those who force these them to do that.

@OsamaMunir Yeah I also live in the same area all three candidates( including pti candidate) are well known for land scams. The reputation of all three candidates is very bas. Unfortunately there was no choice to vote WHOM so I abstained.

We have extreme faith in our Election commission though our politicians are not much better than your and the things will change automatically when an officer like TN Sheshan became the Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan, this man completely overhauled the Election commission of India and election process.
