CEC warning to legislators

Published October 2, 2003

ISLAMABAD, Oct 1: Memberships of legislators, who have failed to submit statements of assets and liabilities by Sept 30, will be suspended till they submit the same, Chief Election Commissioner Justice (Retd) Irshad Hasan Khan said on Wednesday.

The CEC said: “Those [legislators], who failed to file statements of assets and liabilities will cease to be members of the parliament and of provincial assemblies, as the case may be.”

Representation of the People Act, 1976 and Section 25A of the Senate (Election) Act, 1975 as amended by President Gen Pervez Musharraf, required every senator, member of the National Assembly, and provincial assembly to file a statement of assets and liabilities (his own, his spouse and dependents) to the Election Commission every year.

The EC has announced to publish parliament members’ statements in the official Gazette as required by the law.

The EC has said that the members, failing to file the statement of assets and liabilities within the specified period would be notified by the CEC by Oct 15 and such members would cease to function till such a statement was submitted by them.
