Salman Khan's conviction in the September 2002 hit-and-run case is the talk of B-town this morning, and many in the Bollywood fraternity have sent out messages of support and sympathy to the Dabangg actor who now faces five years in prison. Reactions from celebrities poured in as the star's conviction and sentencing was announced.

Rishi Kapoor was among the first to send out a message of solidarity to Salman Khan's family after the sentencing.

While Kapoor's tweet rang a stoic note, others, such as tennis star Sania Mirza, were more despondent.

Dolly Bindra, known for her participation in the reality TV series Bigg Boss, expressed her heartbreak and commiserated with the Khan family.

Karan Johar, who had cast Salman Khan in his upcoming production Shuddhi, also sent out a prayer for the Khan's family's strength.

More support came in from the fraternity later in the afternoon, as Siddharth Malhotra tweeted words of wisdom to the soon-to-be incarcerated star.

Sushmita Sen chimed in with her philosophical take on her Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya co-star's verdict.

One of the sagest comments came from Alia Bhatt earlier in the morning, who summed up the mood of the fraternity.

However, some celebrities took a less sympathetic view and called attention to the misery of those affected in the accident.

Musician Salman Ahmed, apparently irked by the sympathy, refused to recognise his heroic status.

Then there are others who couldn't help but do some number-crunching and estimate the monetary damage entailing the sentencing.

Of course, the hot topic was also perfect fodder for our comedy circuit...

Twitter controversy: Salman Khan supporters go overboard

No one could have predicted that another controversy would stir up as some of Salman Khan's supporters become a little overzealous in their defence of him.

Jewellery designer Farah Khan tried to steer the conversation away from Salman's drunken destruction and towards the government's inability to provide safe accommodation for the homeless.

However, it wasn't until singer Abhijeet tweeted harsh words about the victims of the hit-and-run that Twitter erupted in uproar. Abhijeet directly blamed the victims for the incident.

Stars have slammed Abhijeet for his insensitive comments.
