CHINIOT: Protesters on Sunday besieged the house of a PML-N MNA during a protest against frequent power transformers tripping in their area.

A transformer at Mohallah Rajay Wali, near the residence of MNA Qaisar Ahmad Sheikh, tripped with a bang, damaging electronic items of many houses due to excessive power discharge. Besides, electricity was suspended as the transformer was not replaced.

The angry people took to the street and surrounded the residence of MNA Qaisar Ahmad Sheikh. They were chanting slogans against the PML-N government. Sensing the gravity of the situation, Mr Sheikh came out and assured the protesters that the transformer would be replaced within 24 hours.

The MNA said 60 transformers in the city were either overloaded or two of their phases out of three were working. He said Fesco XEN at Chiniot had assured him of replacing the transformers but it was not done. He added that the federal government had given Fesco Rs18m grant for upgrade of infrastructure which was not used.

The Chiniot XEN was not available for comments.
