SUKKUR: Assailants said to be dacoits fired a rocket targeting a team of the Jarwar police leaving an SHO dead and three constables wounded in the kutcha area of Jarwar in Ghotki district on Wednesday evening.

A police operation in the dacoits-infested kutcha area had been under way for the past 15 days. The entire area remained sealed off during the operation to prevent criminals from slipping out.

According to officials at the Jarwar police station, finding it no more possible to remain entrenched in their heavily fortified hideouts, the dacoits fired a rocket at one of the armoured personnel carriers to break the cordon. Jarwar SHO Mohammed Hassan Kolachi was killed on the spot and constables Ramzan Taggar, Manjhi Sawand and Anwar Mirani were seriously wounded in the attack.

They said that Sulto Shar, the most wanted among the dacoits and the ringleader of one of the gangs trapped in the kutcha area, escaped along with his several associates after breaking the police cordon.

Repeated announcements had earlier been made for the dacoits to surrender themselves but without any positive response, they said.

The body and the wounded victims were taken to the Rahimyar Khan hospital.
