GUJRANWALA, Sept 29: District Nazim Fiaz Ahmad Chattha got a vote of confidence from the house here on Monday.
MNA and PML-Q district president Chaudhry Shahid Akram Bhinder, federal parliamentarian secretary for information Rana Bilal Ijaz, MPAs and tehsil nazims had condemned the district nazims at a news conference some two days ago.
They had also hinted at tabling a no-confidence motion against him for he was not providing funds to opposition members for their uplift projects and using official resources for his own interest.
District Naib Nazim Haji Goher Zaman convened a district council meeting at the local chamber of commerce office on Monday where 184 out of 190 members expressed their confidence on the leadership of the District Nazim. However, Nazim Muhammad Hafiz Khilji and five other members of the district council opposed it.
Later talking to newsmen, the District Nazim said that all the claims of the opposition were turned out to be only hollow slogans. He thanked the members of the house and assured them that funds would be equally divided among them.
ELECTIONS: All office-bearers of the local chamber of commerce and industry were elected unopposed in the annual elections held here on Monday.
Shaukat Javed was elected president, Sheikh Muhammad Ali senior vice-president and Asad Elahi vice-president for the year 2003-04.
Former GCCI president Nawaz Ahmad Bajwa was the returning officer. Four executive council members — Khawaja Aamir Hassan, Ziaullah Irfani, Tanvir Ijaz and Asad Elahi — were already elected unopposed from the member class.
ARRESTED: Saddar police arrested a five-member gang of dacoits and injured one of them in an encounter near Bhatti Bhango village on Monday.
Acting on a tip-off that outlaws were looting passersby, DPO Saud Aziz directed the Saddar police to conduct a raid and arrest them. As the raiding party reached there, the outlaws opened fire on them. The police also returned the fire and after a brief shootout, the outlaws laid their arms after one of their accomplices sustained injuries.
The injured was identified as Abdul Waheed of Rahwali while other accused were identified as ring leader Mudassar Iqbal, Dilawar Hussain, Ashfaq and Amir. Police also recovered looted goods and illicit arms from their possession.
FACILITIES: Provincial Food Minister Chaudhry Muhammad Iqbal has assured the business community that the government will provide better facilities to them by resolving their issues.
Speaking at an oath-taking ceremony of traders here on Monday, he said that industrialists and traders were playing an important role in strengthening the national economy.
He urged the manufacturers to produce quality products so that they could compete in the international market.
Markazi Anjuman Tajran president Sheikh Zulfikar Ali and other officer-bearers extended their cooperation to the government. Later, the minister took oath from office-bearers of the trade organizations.
SHOT DEAD: A landlord was shot dead by his nephew on Monday over some domestic dispute in Dhilanwali village, Kamoki.
Ashraf Mehmood was present in his house when accused Imran came there and opened fire on him after exchanging harsh words. Mehmood died on the spot.
