ISLAMABAD: On the directives of the interior minister, the capital police on Monday surrendered the services of Superintendent of Police (SP) Irum Abbasi to the Establishment Division for misusing power.

The police said at about 2am on Friday, a joint patrolling team of Rangers and police intercepted a Prado with tinted papers. The driver refused to disembark from the vehicle and also disallowed the police to carry out a search, saying he was the brother of the SP Diplomatic Enclave, Irum Abbasi.

However, the Rangers forced the man to disembark after which the police searched the vehicle and removed the tinted papers.

Minutes later, the SP called the policemen and directed them to release the vehicle. The police officials were later suspended and an inquiry was ordered against them after the SP approached higher police authorities.

SP Abbasi could not be contacted for comments on the issue. However, IGP Tahir Alam Khan confirmed to Dawn that the services of SP Abbasi had been surrendered to the Establishment Division on the directives of the interior minister. A report in this regard has also been sent to the minister, he added.

“She got suspended a police patrolling team who intercepted her brother for driving a vehicle with tinted glasses,” the IGP said.

On April 3, she also influenced the Shalimar police to entertain a complaint of her brother against a doctor which led to the registration of a case against the latter.

In early 2014, SP Abbasi was suspended on the directives of the interior minister for using force against the activists of the Defence for Human Rights during a protest at Parade Ground. However, in September, she was reinstated on the request of the IGP due to the shortage of manpower.

Besides, an inquiry was also underway against the SP for not relinquishing the charge of the subdivisional police officer (SDPO) on the direction of the IGP in April last year.
