ISLAMABAD: The judicial commission constituted to probe alleged rigging in the 2013 general elections decided on Thursday to conduct public hearings.

The decision was taken at the first meeting of the commission held at the Supreme Court building in Islamabad today. It was chaired by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Nasirul Mulk.

The first public hearing will be held on April 16 in Court No 1 of the Supreme Court.

Any person or a counsel appearing on behalf of a political party would need to produce due authorisation from the head of the party.

The commission also invited invited proposals from political parties, which participated in the May 2013 elections, to submit supporting material or evidence for its consideration to determine whether elections were organised and conducted impartially, honestly, fairly, justly and in accordance with law.

Secretary to the Chief Justice of Pakistan Muhammad Hamid Ali has been appointed as Secretary to the Inquiry Commission.

The commission was formed following an ordinance issued by President Mamnoon Hussain to investigate allegations of poll rigging, a demand made by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) during the party's 126-day-long sit-in in Islamabad last year.
