Child porn ring smashed

Published September 27, 2003

BERLIN, Sept 26: German authorities said Friday they had cracked a huge Internet child pornography ring, triggering probes against thousands of suspects worldwide after a sweep in 166 countries.

The interior and justice ministries in the eastern region of Saxony-Anhalt said in a statement that they, in cooperation with investigators around the globe, had achieved “the most significant victory against the international child pornography scene” to date. The months-long probe codenamed Marcy, coordinated by Interpol and the German federal crime office, led investigators to some 26,500 suspects who swapped illegal images on the Internet.—AFP
