ISLAMABAD: Liaquat Ali of Pakistan Army came out all guns blazing to win gold medal in the 100-metre sprint clocking 9.99 seconds as the National Athletics Championships started here at the Jinnah Stadium, Pakistan Sports Complex on Friday.

At the end of the first day, Wapda were leading in the women’s events with six golds, while Army topped the men’s contests with four golds, followed by Wapda with three gold medals.

Wapda chairman Zafar Meh­mood was the chief guest at the opening ceremony while AFP president retired Maj Gen Mohammad Akram Sahi and Army Sports Directorate DG Brig Ghulam Jillani also attended the ceremony.

In the women’s 800m race, Wapda’s Rabia Ashiq won gold, Samabia Noureen also of Wapda silver and Bisma Afzal of the HEC bronze.

In javelin throw, Saira Saeed of Wapda claimed gold (37.83 metres), followed by Gulnaz Nasir of the HEC and Wapda’s Tahira Parveen.

In long jump, Mariam Babar of Wapda clinched gold, Nighat Kau­sar of the HEC silver and Amina Siraj also of the HEC bronze.

Wapda’s Zeenat Parveen grabbed the shot put gold, Nazia Kausar also of Wapda silver and HEC’s Kandeel Anayat bronze.

In high jump, Umme Habiba of Army won gold followed by Nasreen Akhtar (silver) and Rozina Shafqat (bronze). Both are of Wapda.

Najma Parveen of Wapda won the coveted 100-metre gold, followed by Wapda’s Sahiba-e-Asra (silver) and Samara Shabbir of Army (bronze).

Wapda’s Farhat Bano seized gold medal in 10,000-metre, her departmental colleague Nasreen Kausar silver and HEC’s Farhat Batool bronze.

Meanwhile, Wapda and Army reigned supreme in the men’s competitions.

In the 100-metre race, Army’s Liaquat Ali claimed gold medal in 9.99 seconds, followed by Wapda’s Samiullah (silver) and Abdul Jabbar (bronze), also of Wapda.

In pole vault, Rehan Anjum of Army won gold followed by Adnan Anjum, also of Army, silver and Wapda’s Mohammad Ismail bronze.

Ramiz Javed of Army took the 5,000-metre gold, Adnan Khan (Army) silver and Wapda’s Mohammad Imran bronze.

In triple jump contest, Mohammad Akhtar of Wapda won gold with (15.11 metres), Army’s Zafar Iqbal secured silver and Mohammad Afzal of Army collected bronze.

In shot put, Wapda’s Shafqat Hussain clinched gold (16.75 metres), Mohammad Waseem Junior of Army silver and Mohammad Waseem Senior, also of Army, bronze.

In javelin throw, Arshad Nadeem of Wapda captured gold (70.64 metres), Sanaullah of Army silver and Sindh’s Shakeel Ahmed bronze.
