QUETTA, Sept 25: The Balochistan assembly on Thursday rejected with a majority vote an opposition leader’s resolution demanding abolition of existing quota system for recruitment in the Frontier Corps (FC).

Meanwhile, the opposition staged a token walkout when the chair ruled out of order a joint adjournment motion to discuss protest at the LFO in the lower house.

Opposition leader Kachkol Ali Baloch speaking on his resolution described the quota system for recruitment in the FC as discriminatory, saying that it deprived the locals of jobs in the agency.

He suggested that those appointed in the FC from the NWFP and Punjab should be sent back to their respective provinces to accommodate the jobless youth of Balochistan in the federal agency.

Contesting some claims of the opposition leader, Minister for Sports Younus Changezi said the army and Frontier Corps were ready to employ thousands of persons from Balochistan in the federal security forces.

He said, about 1,600 vacancies had been reserved for the people of Kharan, Kalat, Khuzdar, Loralai and other areas, but only 200 people were ready to join the federal forces.

Haji Juma Bugti, parliamentary leader of the JWP, said his 7,000 tribesmen were willing to join the federal forces and commented that the authorities made only verbal claims but in practice the Balochs were discouraged to get jobs in the federal agencies on one pretext or the other.

Sardar Sanaullah Zehri, parliamentary leader of the BNDP, assured the sports minister that he would fully cooperate in providing the youth for recruitment in the Frontier Corps, demanding that medical examination of the Balochs should be exempted.

Minister for Services and General Administration Mir Abdur Rehman Jamali pointed out that the youth from Balochistan were reluctant to have them examined medically, which was the main hurdle in their recruitment.

ADJOURNMENT: The rejection of the joint adjournment motion of Kachkol Ali, Rahim Ziaratwal and Akbar Mengal created an uproar in the house for 10 minutes as opposition members were stressing that a debate on the anti-LFO protest of the PPP, MMA and the PML-N in parliament was necessary.

On the rejection, the opposition blamed the speaker for partial attitude and later staged a walkout from the session.

Earlier, the adjournment motions of Naseem Turyala (PMAP), Rehmat Ali (BNM) and Kachkol Ali (BNM) were not pressed when the chief minister assured that he would look into the matters taken up in the motions.

The speaker deferred three resolutions till next private day, besides a debate on the adjournment motion of a BNM member to discuss the strike of unemployed doctors.

Tehreek-i-Istiqlal: Tehreek-i-Istiqlal leader Rehmat Khan Vardag has urged the government to construct the Kalabagh dam and other water reservoirs.

Speaking at a press conference here on Wednesday he said that the government should not pay heed to the landlords of Sindh and the NWFP who were misleading the people.

He said building water reservoirs was necessary not only for overcoming the water shortage but for bringing down the electricity tariff.

He criticized the former premiers, Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif, for signing agreements with the international power producers and buying electricity at expensive rates.

Suggesting construction of three small dams in Sadiqabad, Mirpur Meris and Sehwan, he said that they would be useful particularly for Sindh.
