RAWALPINDI, Sept 24: The district authorities on Wednesday destroyed 8,000 kilograms of fungus-infested pickles, which had been confiscated from different shops during the ongoing anti- food adulteration campaign.

“We confiscated and destroyed 200 drums of pickles, each weighing 40kg,” district Nazim Raja Tariq Kiani told Dawn at the dumping site.

This is the third major destruction of unhygienic and adulterated food carried out by the district government.

Earlier, over 12,000 litres of milk being transported in unhygienic plastic containers was disposed of, followed by dumping of 68 bags of adulterated spices.

The Nazim, on this occasion, announced initiation of action against the flour mills involved in adulteration.

He said the inspection team would now visit the flour mills to collect samples of the commodity being produced by them.

He urged the retailers to stop buying adulterated products from the wholesalers or else they too would be brought under the inspection net.

At the beginning of the drive, the district government had vowed to focus on the big fish in the adulteration business, particularly manufacturers, wholesalers and stockists.
