KARACHI, Sept 24: City Nazim Naimatullah Khan has directed the officials concerned to complete by November 15 the carpeting and patchwork of all those major roads of the city government, towns and union councils which were badly damaged in the recent rains.
Sources in the city government said the Nazim, with a view to saving hiring charges of private asphalt plants, had asked the officials to ensure that all the asphalt plants of the city government were run round-the-clock to provide 50,000 tons of pre-mixed asphalt concrete to be laid on roads.
At present the city government’s three asphalt plants, which are located in Mehmoodabad, Mewashah and Sohrab Goth, are operating, while the forth one situated in Safoora Goth will start functioning soon.
Reiterating that the city government has chalked out a comprehensive plan for undertaking road restoration work at a cost of Rs85 million, the sources said that for the purpose the city had been divided in to five zones and in all a total of 66,50,00 square feet area would be carpeted, equally in each zone which included an area of 25,00, 00 square feet to be covered by four-centimetre machine carpeting with paver.
Unfolding details of the road repair works, the sources said approximately 1,25,00 square feet area would be carpeted in five zones, each day, and bitumen for carpeting roads would be acquired from the National Refi-nery.
JEHANGIR ROAD: About Jehangir and Business Recorder roads which are in highly dilapidated condition, a spokesman for the city government told Dawn that construction of both the roads would begin in a couple of days and the work-order for the purpose had been issued to contractors.
He also claimed that carpeting and patchwork had already begun on a number of roads including Mauripur-Gulbai Road, Old M A Jinnah Road (from Native Jetty Bridge to Keamari Port), Shahrah-i-Orangi (from Banaras Chowk to Islam Chowk), Faqir Colony Road (from Hub River Road to graveyard), Major Anwer Shamim Road (from Manghopir Road to Qalandria Chowk) and Allama Shabbir Usmani Road.
LAW & ORDER SITUATION: Nazim Karachi Naimatullah Khan on Monday described the law and order situation in Karachi as normal, and said that just because of a light blast in a building the South African team should not have cancelled its visit to Karachi, adds APP.
“ It is only false propaganda creating a problem, otherwise things are not bad here,” the Nazim said and offered SA team to do visit Karachi and play while speaking at a reception given for Pakistan and Bangladesh cricket teams at the Kashmir Road Sports Complex on Tuesday evening.
He said he was delighted to welcome the team of a country so close to the hearts of Pakistanis, and added that cricket had brought the two nations close to each other and also the Islamic world.
The Nazim, the Naib Nazim and the DCO presented gifts to the members of the cricket teams of the two countries.
