SHC disposes of plea challenging Saulat Mirza death warrant

KARACHI: Disposing of a petition filed by Saulat Mirza's sister challenging his death warrant, the Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday advised her to approach the Supreme Court.

Earlier this week, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Karachi had issued Mirza's death warrant after the moratorium on the death penalty was lifted completely.

Preparations for the execution of Saulat Mirza are underway in Balochistan's Machh Central Jail.

Mirza's sister Samira Wajahat petitioned that an appeal against her brother's conviction was pending in the apex court and hence the implementation of his death sentence should be suspended until the SC decided on the appeal.

Disposing of the petition, the court advised Samira Wajahat to approach the Supreme Court with her application, as that is where her earlier appeal was submitted.

Mirza was sentenced to death by the ATC in May 1999 for murdering the managing director of then-named Karachi Electric Supply Corporation Shahid Hamid, his driver Ashraf Brohi and guard Khan Akbar in July 1997. He was moved along with four high-profile prisoners to the Machh jail, Balochistan, in April 2014.

Plea for what, he confessed killing dozens as no one does in video games,burning properties etc. Why his party high commands are not yet taken in to custody from where he was getting orders, why actions were taken on these kind of confessions for a decade...

I think the only solution for Mirza family - to either delay hanging or change hanging decision to life imprisonment is to ask courts and LEAs to punish the "masters". Mirza killed people and deserves punishment BUT "someone" must have ordered him to shoot and kill. Why we are not thinking about motive and real masterminds? Mirza was a pawn.

In a way the petition is correct. When the case is pending in SC how come a lower court issue death warrant. Let the SC decide on the case & then do accordingly. All murders should get punished, this is justice but proper procedure should be followed.

I do have all the sympathy with these ladies but question arise why they have not conducted any press conference and appeal in any court since 1999 and no male member of the family is accompanying them

@Viking Star Be it any party or any group or gang, master minds are rarely touched, if ever. In cases of drug peddling too it is only the paid carriers which are sometimes held but even in that case no one knows whether they are punished or not.

@Aaqil if the peddlers don't peddle, and the gang members don't carryout the actions of higher ups then the higher ups will have to do the dirty work. You cannot shift partial responsibility to someone else. There are people who claim God ordered them to kill, so what are you going to do?

@Let his plea application decide by supreme court, he should get justice, since S.Mirza, got parole, and spent 16 yrs in jail, he should be given some mercy and change to life sentence.

We should not forget the real hands behind him, who are mainly responsible for people like Saulat. People like Saulat mirza are just the executors, the thing is that the real culprits should be hanged who give instruction of Targeted Killings
