QUETTA: The Balochistan government on Thursday constituted a nine-member medical board for a health check-up of former military ruler Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf in light of the Akbar Bugti murder case.

The medical team has been constituted on the directives of the court, sources in the Balochistan government told Dawn. The nine-member medical board includes senior surgeons and physicians.

"We formed the nine-member medical board on the court's directives," a senior health officer confirmed to Dawn.

Surgeons Jamil ur Rehman, Behram Khan, Syed Dawood Shah and other senior doctors are part of the team. The board is expected visit Karachi to conduct the medical check-up after which the report will be presented before the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Quetta.

Nawab Akbar Bugti was killed in an operation on August 26, 2006 in Balochistan's mountainous Kohlu district. Bugti's son, Nawabzada Jamil Akbar Bugti, had nominated the former president and other high-ups of that time in the murder of his father. However, Musharraf was granted exemption from appearing before the court on the grounds of ill health.

Advocate Akhtar Shah, counsel for Musharraf, had submitted an application in the court on Tuesday seeking a one-day exemption for his client.The ATC judge accepted the application and granted exemption to the former president from appearing before the court on Wednesday.

Advocate Sohail Rajput — the counsel of Nawabzada Jamil Akbar Bugti — had confronted Musharraf's lawyer and pleaded that the application should be rejected since the accused was deliberately not appearing before the court despite repeated orders.

Officials of the Balochistan health department had assured the court that the medical report on Musharraf's health would be presented before the court after his check-up.

The court subsequently adjourned the case to March 17.
