Injured Pims cardiologist dies

ISLAMABAD: Prof Dr Shahid Nawaz Malik, the head of the cardiology department at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims), died at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) on Friday.

Prof Malik was shot in the back of his head by two motorcycle riders at the parking area of the hospital on February 14. On February 15, he was shifted to the CMH from Pims on the request of his family.

Pims media coordinator Dr Waseem Khawaja told Dawn that Prof Malik’s body was shifted to Pims for a postmortem and later sent to his native village in the district of Chakwal. An official of the Margalla police said a case under section 324/34 (attempt to murder) had been registered against the attackers. “However, after the death of the injured, section 302 will be added to the FIR,” he said.

Meanwhile, medical and paramedical staff as well as students at Pims expressed grief and sorrow over the death of Prof Malik.
