LBs be placed under govt, says MPA

NOWSHERA, Sept 19: A woman member of the NWFP Assembly, Fauzia Farrukh, has said that the local bodies should be made subservient to the provincial government as enunciated in the 1973 Constitution.

The local bodies constituted under the Legal Framework Order were functioning as a parallel setup to the provincial government, she said and added that the local governments should be made accountable to the provincial government.

Speaking at a workshop organized by the Aurat Foundation for women councillors here on Friday, Ms Farrukh said it was an strange anomaly that the charge of the provincial departments had been handed over to the local governments and at the same time these were linked with the Centre, which complicated the situation.

The religious parties alliance wanted to purge the new system of all these discrepancies, anomalies and deficiencies so that the problems of the common man could be resolved at his doorstep, the MMA MPA said.
