KARACHI: A special team of police on Thursday left for the United Arab Emirates to get the custody of Uzair Baloch, a leader of one of the criminal gangs operating in Lyari, held by Interpol in December 2014 as he was wanted in over two dozen criminal cases by the city police, the Karachi police chief said.

A last desperate attempt by Uzair Baloch to keep himself in the custody of the UAE police by setting himself up in a ‘fake’ extortion case had been failed, added Additional Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Ghulam Qadir Thebo.

“The police team led by SSP Naveed Khowaja left on Thursday at 6.30pm for the UAE to bring back Uzair Baloch here,” said Mr Thebo.

The police had applied for an official visa but since its process was getting delayed, the police team had gone there on a visit visa. One representative of the Rangers was also included in the team, he said.

“We have come to know that one complainant has approached Dubai police and alleged that Uzair Baloch had extracted 20,000 Dirhams as protection money from him,” said the Karachi police chief. However, the local police there did not entertain his complaint.
