KARACHI, Sept 18: The anti-smuggling staff of the customs on Thursday seized 29,300kg smuggled betel nuts being brought to Karachi.

Earlier, information was received that a huge quantity of smuggled betel nuts had been stored in Gulbai, and another huge quantity would be transported to Karachi through the RCD Highway.

Accordingly, a raiding team of the Anti-Smuggling Organization spotted a truck, No QAJ-8111, apparently loaded with fruit crates.

The party followed the truck to its destination, where the custom’s staff carried out a raid and seized 312 gunny bags containing betel nuts weighing 26,250kg.

Two persons were arrested and an FIR was lodged in the court of special judge (Customs & Taxation).

In another raid, the Drug Enforcement Cell of the Preventive Collectorate seized 3,050kg smuggled betel nuts hidden under the plastic bags containing coconuts.—APP
